OriginIn
King Kong Escapes, Gorosaurus was a dinosaur living in Mondo Island. He attacked and attempted to devour Susan Watson. King Kong soon appeared to save her and fought Gorosaurus. Gorosaurus was a formidable opponent due to his powerful "kangaroo"-style" kick. However, Kong snapped the dinosaur's jaws (a referance to 1933's
King Kong), defeating Gorosaurus conclusively.
In
Destroy All Monsters,
Gorosaurus appeared on Monsterland, an artificially created environment
for the giant monsters of Earth. Considering his fate at the end of
King Kong Escapes,
as well as his increased size, it seems fair to speculate that this is
a different Gorosaurus altogether. He lived with other monsters
including Kumonga, Minilla, Varan, and Manda. But all was not well, as a race of aliens called Kilaaks
invaded the planet. They captured and mind-controlled the monsters,
releasing them in cities throughout the world. Gorosaurus was released
in Paris, France, where he attacked and destroyed the city. However,
the humans retaliated and broke the mind control. The aliens were not
finished, and used King Ghidorah
to attack the Earth monsters, who were now being controlled by the
humans. Gorosaurus played an important role in the battle, as he
knocked Ghidorah to the ground with his signature kick, leaving
Ghidorah helpless and vulnerable. Then Gorosaurus and the other
monsters successfully destroyed the space monster once and for all.
After the fight, Gorosaurus and the other monsters were returned to
Monster Island where they lived in peace to this day. Gorosaurus later
appeared in
All Monsters Attack in Ichiro's dream.
CharacteristicsGorosaurus was a fairly generic dinosaur-like giant monster in
Toho's staple, serving as little more than a speed bump for Kong in his
1967 adventure. His modern fanbase likely exists because of his
impressive performance in
Destroy All Monsters. His prominence
in the film is almost certainly the result of the Gorosaurus costume
being in fine shape compared to other reused props and costumes.
Indeed, his appearance in Paris appears to be as a last-minute
replacement for Baragon: he burrows underneath the Arc de Triomphe in a
very Baragon-style maneuver, uses Baragon's roar, and is referred to as
"Baragon" by both French and Japanese newscasters! (This error is in
the original and not a dubbing artifact.) However, it is not for
destroying Paris but for aiding in the defeat of King Ghidorah that
Gorosaurus is remembered. He brings down the monster not once but twice
in the battle; he is the only monster to bring down King Ghidorah at
all; and he is along with Anguirus and Godzilla responsible for
administering the beating that killed the beast. In addition, there is
a charming shot of him "strategizing" with Godzilla during the battle,
indicating a certain intelligence on his part. Regrettably, his role in
Destroy All Monsters was an anomaly, for unlike most of his kin
he has not proved popular enough to appear in a later film, aside from
stock footage here and there.
Gorosaurus is possessed of no exceptional durability or weaponry,
and as such must be considered to be rather low on the power scale of
Toho monsters. Like Anguirus, he appeals to those who like "no-frills"
Japanese monsters.
